What is Naturopathic Medicine?

Naturopathic medicine is the blend of traditional forms of medicine with modern medicine. The goal is to treat the underlying cause of disease and support the body’s natural healing ability, leading to balanced physiology and reduction of symptoms and disease. With a focus on whole person health, Naturopathic Doctors provide personalized treatments for the individual. Naturopathic medicine can be used for both acute and chronic conditions and is a leader in preventative medicine.

Therapeutic plans from a Naturopathic Doctor often include individualized diet and lifestyle support. This is often combined with botanical medicine, Traditional Chinese Medicine (acupuncture), homeopathy, physical medicine, regenerative medicine, hydrotherapy, and prescription medications like hormone therapy in jurisdictions with prescriptive rights.

Winnipeg Naturopathic Initial Assessment with Dr. Lauren Cottom

WHAT DOES THE PROCESS LOOK LIKE?

The first appointment is all about you and collecting your health history, specifically surrounding your main concerns. We get quite detailed on the history of the concerns, in effort to put a clear picture together on what may be contributing to symptoms. We often
say disease or syndrome states are multifactorial, meaning there are many things contributing to your current state of health. We focus on both internal and external stressors to tease out what areas we need to support. We always assess other systems that may or may not be part of your symptom picture, with a large focus on digestion and the menstrual cycle, as well as lifestyle habits. The history helps us develop a strategy of what labs or imaging we need to be done and any necessary referrals.

Once we’ve established where you’re at, step one is always setting the foundations for what is to come. The foundations often lie in lifestyle, as well as correcting deficiencies
(dietary, yes, but also sleep for example)! Your first treatment plan will include a lot of detailed information on lifestyle, sometimes accompanied by a supplement
recommendation- be it nutraceutical or herbs. Once labs are reviewed at the first follow up, we move to step 2 with a more targeted and specific treatment plan developed based on the additional detail the lab results provide.

Treatment suggestions will often
include a combination of lifestyle recommendations (diet, sleep habits, stress management, exercise etc.) with herbal supplementation, nutraceuticals (vitamins), acupuncture, and/or Mercier Therapy. If we’re addressing skin concerns, microneedling or cosmetic acupuncture will likely be involved as well.

Cosmetic Acupuncture

WHAT DOES THE PROCESS LOOK LIKE?

Small needles are gently inserted into the skin at specific points along the body. The needles used are sterile and single use. Each treatment is individualized to the patient, with point selection determined by the practitioner based on the signs and symptoms discussed. Some points may be more tender, however often you feel very little, a slight poke if anything. Rest and relax while the treatment is delivered. Following a cosmetic acupuncture treatment, facial serums and moisturizers are applied.

Traditional Acupuncture

WHAT DOES THE PROCESS LOOK LIKE?

Lay down, get comfy.

Cosmetic PRP

WHAT IS PRP?

PRP is a regenerative therapy that uses the patient’s own blood to create an injectable solution containing a high concentration of platelets. The platelets, suspended in some plasma, are then injected back into the treatment area. PRP is rich in growth factors, nutrients, and amino acids which help to communicate and activate local stem cells. The micro-trauma to the tissue also signals recruitment of more growth factors and nutrients to the site of ‘injury’. The increase in growth factors and nutrients may lead to increased blood flow and circulation, enhanced tissue repair, tissue quality and wound healing, collagen and elastin production, and faster recovery from injury.

WHAT DOES THE PRP PROCESS LOOK LIKE?

A quick blood draw in office, then the blood is off to the centrifuge where the platelets and plasma separate from red blood cells.

In the meantime, we prep your skin with numbing cream and allow you to rest while we wait on the platelets.

Once spun and concentrated, the Platelet Rich Plasma is then extracted into syringes and ready for use. This solution is then redistributed over the treatment area and injected back into the skin using the SkinPen.

Dr Lauren is also trained to perform manual injections of PRP into specific areas for more targeted concerns. Manual injections can produce some discomfort, however the rest with the Skinpen is very comfortable.

Optimal results occur with a series of 3-6 treatments spaced 6 weeks apart, depending depending on the target area.

PRP FOR HAIR LOSS:

The goal is always to try and get to the root of your hair loss, which is often multifactorial. Causes may include hormonal imbalances, nutrient deficiencies, stress, genetics, and environmental stressors.

If you’re curious about how PRP could fit into your treatment plan, please schedule a consult with Dr. Lauren

PRP FOR FACE:

PRP facials involve the use of the SkinPen micropen, which is used over the treatment area after redistributing the PRP onto the skin somewhat like a serum but may also be injected into areas of concern to tackle deeper scars, wrinkles, or folds.

Are Naturopathic services covered by insurance?

Yes! Naturopathic Medicine, like other paramedical services, are often covered by your insured benefits and/or health spending account! Plans will vary as to coverage, typically a % of the service will be covered up to a certain yearly maximum dollar amount.
